As this would be worryingly careless, German outlet DW Games' claim that the 50-year-old is "intrigued" in a £18.3 million arrangement to sign Schalke veteran Benedikt Howedes is an alleviation.
Howedes has dropped out of support at his present club following the entry of chief Domenico Tedesco in June, and is said to be thinking about a move to Britain.
The 29-year-old played nearby Matip amid their chance together at Schalke, and would be a fine expansion to supplement the Cameroonian.
