Virgil Van Dijk will be signed by Liverpool from Southampton if Phillipe Coutinho signs for Barcelona, Stuart Pearce has claimed.
After Neymar completed a world-record transfer to PSG, Liverpool have been facing a war to keep hold of one of their finest players as Barcelona have him lined up as Neymar's replacement.
Liverpool have suffered in this transfer window in their inability to complete deals for Van Dijk and Nay Keita.
Pearce told Sky Sports on Monday : "It's not like for like, But they'll step up finance for Van Dijk".
“All of a sudden, we know that Barcelona have got finance so that’s pushed the asking price up if Barcelona ring".
“If Liverpool sell him, all of a sudden they’ve got more money – and that money might just be sent to the south coast to Southampton [to sign Van Dijk]. It’s a drip feed thing.”
Liverpool have thus far signed 3 players in Dominic Solanke, Mo Salah and Andrew Robertson from Hull City.
